Why don’t we talk about eating disorders (DCAs)?

COVID-19 needs to be addressed

A group of students of Communication Sciences, Marketing and Digital Media wanted to respond to the social problem of eating disorders in young people. According to the students, this problem is related to the hyperconnected societies in which we live that bring consequences observable in the disproportionate importance given to how one appears on social networks or to want to achieve certain standards of beauty. The social problem is therefore linked to the negative consequences with respect to the relationship of young people with food and their bodies.

The students have tried to break these patterns, with the aim of providing a message about the importance of loving oneself and accepting oneself as one is.

Brief description

Eating disorders (DCAs) were the focus of an e-Service-Learning project (Extreme type) carried out during the second academic semester 2021 of an interdisciplinary Service-Learning Lab. The project involved 6 Communication, Marketing, and Digital Media students.

The students chose the social problem related to the lack of information on eating disorders, its effects on physical health and psychological functioning; in particular, the students wanted to deepen: what are DCA, how are they related to the canons of beauty of contemporary societies, what are the paths of diagnosis and treatment.

The students realized an Advocacy Service-Learning project, creating an awareness video aimed at a target audience between 16 and 30 years old.

Before making the video, students analyzed several social profiles of famous and not-so-famous people, critically reflecting on the work behind the images posted on social and the alteration of the subjects represented.
For the realization of the awareness video, students have employed a type of communication based on visual and psychological involvement and have used the IMovie program, combining stock images to their own personal elaboration.
The video – which can be viewed at the following link – has been disseminated on various social channels, both individual and institutional. The video has also been used by a third sector reality that deals with prevention in this area, in order to raise awareness about DCA.
The reflection process was conducted throughout the project in an online mode.
