Test reviewing as service-learning

Based on the Spanish review model for evaluating test quality (http://www.cop.es, evaluacion tests) we designed a service-learning project for providing independent reports on the quality of the tests available at the Psychology Test Library of the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona while teaching psychometrics at undergraduate level.

Since 2010, we have

(a) evaluated 91 tests,

(b) gathered evidence of criterion validity for students’ reports against expert reviewers’ reports (Viladrich et al., 2014, EAM Conference),

(c) contributed to the development of the Spanish test review model (CET-R, Hernández et al., 2016, http://www.psychologistpapers.com ) and

(d) received a good practice award (Doval, 2016, http://www.uab.cat, suport innovacio).

In 2019, the Spanish Test Commission invited us to lead the eighth edition of test reviews in Spain, which we conducted devising a participatory process that involved 332 students organized in 69 teams, seven teachers-editors and 10 external experts who reviewed 11 tests submitted by four publishers (Viladrich et al., 2019, http://www.uab.cat, aprenentatge servei). The 2019 Spanish reports are freely available at https://www.cop.es/index.php?page=evaluacion-tests-editados-en-espana.

Beyond these published outcomes, we have identified three contributions of our project to the community development. First, it has helped to increase the social acceptance of the evaluation of commercial tests by prospective users still in the training phase of their professional careers; second, the project has also helped to increase students’ acceptance of the problem-based learning methodology; and, third, the project has raised increasing institutional support.
