S-L experience with Plataforma per la Llengua (Balearic Islands), the Catalan language NGO

This service-learning (S-L) project was implemented as a pilot experience for one of the groups in the subject 22102 – Catalan Language (Bachelor’s Degree in Primary Education), at the University of the Balearic Island, during the first term of the academic year 2021-2022. It was one of the options that the students were offered for the oral presentation. The student Mireia González Murillo felt encouraged to participate and chose this option. According to the entity’s needs, she carried out several tasks, such as summarising the report InformeCat 2021 about the state of the language, creating didactic materials to facilitate the language learning among newcomers, and writing a letter to convince enterprises of using Catalan in their products (poster ads, labels, and websites) in case they don’t.

These tasks allowed her to achieve curricular contents of the subject in a practical, applied way. For instance, when working on the InformeCat 2021 report, she became familiar with data about the language’s social use, and when she created teaching materials for newcomers, she took into account the collectives in which the language is less present. Finally, they sent the letter to a widely-known multinational; when she saw that, regardless of the number of speakers, the enterprise’s website was only available in state official languages, like Icelandic, the role that politics play in all this became obvious.

Plataforma per la Llengua (Pro-language Platform), the Catalan language NGO, is a well-established organisation in the Catalan-speaking territory that works to promote the Catalan language as a social cohesion tool. The student closely collaborated with the technicians at the Balearic Islands delegation, prepared a report on her project results, and presented it to the whole group class. The assessments conducted by the entity as well as the subject lecturer were very positive and counted for 30% of the final grade. The student also evaluated the experience with a high degree of satisfaction.
