Environmental Law Clinic

One of the places where Law students can do their work experience programme is CEDAT, the Tarragona Centre for Environmental Law Studies, which contains the Environmental Law Clinic. In the field of Law, one of the most common types of international service learning programme is Clinical Legal Education, a global movement for social justice that involves students and teachers from all over the world. The services offered by students under the supervision of the institution’s teaching staff include: the writing of legal reports and statements, the writing of local legislative proposals, and conciliation and mediation in environmental matters. From the beginning of its activity, the academic year 2005-2006, and until the academic year 2017-2018, the Environmental Law Clinic worked on a total of 78 cases for more than 30 clients.

The social concern due to the deterioration of our ecosystem has been reflected in the legal field through the progressive implementation of legal techniques, the study of which is included in the Official Master’s Degree in Environmental Law, the ecological audit of the company, the labeling systems ecological, the administrative and criminal sanction of illegal environmental acts or civil liability in the field of the environment.

The duration of the Master is two years, and the Environmental Law Clinic (ELC) practice takes place the second quarter of the second and last year with a value of 9 credits, and it’s mandatory in the curricular itinerary. The teaching team of the clinic, before the start of each academic year, meets in a coordination session in order to select the cases proposed by the potential clients, with whom it has had a first contact. The teaching team also decides the configuration of the teams and the assignment of tutors, taking into account various effectiveness criteria.

Once the cases have been selected and the groups formed, the working dynamics of the Environmental Law Clinic is structured around group work of 3/4 people and plenary sessions.
Each group has a main tutor and an assistant tutor, who are responsible for leading it.
Once the case has been assigned, the group’s first task is to arrange an interview with the client, in order to specify and formalize the assignment. The results of the work are presented in a plenary session of the Clinic, to the client in an e-magazine arranged for this purpose and, if appropriate, publicly in the most appropriate way, in order to give recognition to the work done and to use it as a brand of quality and distinction of the Environmental Law Studies at the URV.

The Environmental Law Clinic has received the following awards:
2007: Award of the Social Council of the URV to the Teaching Quality.
2018: Award of the Social Council of the URV to the Teaching Quality for the project Social Gardens at the URV: The environmental education to the social innovation.
