Abstract:

In 2002 the Applied Spanish: Community Studies minor at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) was approved by the Tennessee Board of Regents. The Applied Spanish minor is a 21 credit-hour interdisciplinary minor that melds community-based service-learning with traditional classroom methodology. This article presents a curricular model that other institutions may wish to follow. It describes the origin and development of the program, its courses and service-leaming opportunities, and the results of a survey that evaluates benefits to students in the areas of cultural understanding and knowledge of Hispanics, language learning attitudes, leadership skills, social responsibility, and career impact.

Abstract:

With decreased funding and personnel reductions in many libraries across the United States, local librarians are searching for innovative methods to create sustainable partnerships in the community. Using Mississippi State University’s Day One Leadership Community as a case study, this article illustrates how service-learning provides a dynamic connection between a public library and a local university. Establishing such a partnership proved beneficial for student learning, helpful in accomplishing projects in a local library, and through the resulting publicity provided greater interest in and access to library materials for the local community. Program components, personal experiences, and ideas for program replication are shared.

Abstract:

This study aims to explore a possibility of implementation of “Service-Learning”program into the Korean University curriculum. To do so, the author took some Korean university students to Malaysia and organized a volunteer project in July 2009. In the middle of the project, the participants were asked for producing their “reflection paper”and drew what impressed them the most during the stay. The data collected has been categorized into three different groups such as positive descriptions, negative descriptions and others, and analysed in order to find the experiences which made impacts on them.It allows authors to find the ones led them to some rare overseas “learning experiences”.On top of that, some descriptions, which are able to connect with a reparation program as well as a post-session evaluation program for the next project. It can be said that the result may illuminate the possibility of implementation of Service-Learning program into the Korean university curriculum.

Abstract:

Service Learning uses community service as the vehicle for the achievement of specific academic goals and objectives. This paper is the first in a series of papers, dedicated to research and practice of service learning in institutions of higher learning in Malaysia. In this paper, I introduce the concept of Service Learning by looking back at thirty years of research and practice of SL to revisit some of its basic principles. Taking into consideration, the early developments of SL in Malaysia, this paper concludes with views on why tertiary institutions in Malaysia would greatly benefit by incorporating SL into their courses.
