Abstract:

Abstract:

Learning environments have become increasingly digital in recent decades, requiring teachers and students to develop general digital competences across all educational systems and stages. This also means that for future teachers, professional digital competencies are a valuable asset that enables them to work with the technologies already fully integrated in schools and embedded in most curricula. This paper describes the use of digital communication technology throughout the different stages of a Service Learning Project, involving 2nd and 3rd year students from the Degree in Primary Education at the Universidad Complutense, Madrid. Students and their teachers involved in the project use specific digital communication tools which favour the interaction and completion of the project goal: supporting literacy programmes in two languages for underprivileged students in two local schools. This paper analyses the tools used in the different stages of the project, the digital competencies they are related to and their suitability for similar Service Learning Projects.

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to examine the perception of the professional competence of students who are attending Physical Activity and Sport (PAS) related degrees, participating in University Service-Learning (USL) projects, according to their sex and age, as well as the profile of the target group of these projects. 211 students from seven Spanish universities participated in the study (male = 88, female = 123). Their age was between 19 and 35 and all students participated in PAS USL projects with nine different vulnerable groups. The instrument used to determine the professional learning and effects of USL in PAS was the scale “Service-Learning in Physical Activity” (S-LPA, E-ASAF in Spanish). Six dimensions form S-LPA: learning, pedagogical value, social impact, professional development, professional skills, and opinion. With regard to the relationship between the characteristics of the students and the results, gender (men and women), age range (<20 years, 21-24 years and >25 years), and type of target group in this study (functional, social, and cultural/religious diversity) were studied. Statistical analyses were carried out using a multivariate analysis of variance MANOVA). All dimensions of the scale were significant except the social impact and professional skills. Gender, age range, and type of target group showed significant differences regarding the dimensions of the S-LPA scale. In addition, the interaction between type of target group/gender and type of target group/age range showed a relationship with the dimensions of pedagogical value and professional development. In conclusion, this study shows the relationship of the USL with the consolidation of curricular content and the perception of professional learning in PAS students, as well as the relationship with factors such as gender and age of the students and the type of target groups.

Abstract:

An analysis of the didactic-mathematical knowledge put into play by a sample of 30 prospective primary teachers during their participation in a Service-Learning program focused on mathematical stimulation as a measure of attention to adolescents at risk of social exclusion is presented. The program aimed to respond to current training demands by promoting the development of mathematics-specific professional competencies, as well as social skills to interact with students, and to positively influence the prospective teachers’ affection towards mathematics and its teaching. It was developed during three academic years in two phases: the learning module was oriented to the presentation of the mathematical stimulus program and the didactical analysis of the STEAM activities knocking it into shape; in the service module, the participants implemented the activities in an educational center with students at risk of social exclusion. The analysis was carried out from the video recordings of the sessions, the future teachers’ written reports with the analysis of the activities, questionnaires on the didactic-mathematical knowledge and a satisfaction test. The results show difficulties on the part of the future teachers to analyze some of the activities of the program, which seems to have its origin in their poor command of the common knowledge of the mathematical content, which also limits them when it comes to managing the activities in the way expected for the stimulus program. All in all, participation in the program was positively assessed by them in relation to its usefulness for their training. The potential benefit of Service-Learning programs such as the one addressed here in the face of a positive impact on the affections towards mathematics is concluded, as a necessary step for a more effective acquisition of didactic-mathematical knowledge and skills in the initial training.

Abstract:

In this chapter, a systematic review of the literature on evaluations of service-learning projects in the area of business and economics has been carried out. The authors have analyzed the four basic parts of evaluation: who evaluates, when to evaluate, how to evaluate, and what to evaluate. Subsequently, an evaluation proposal has been made for each of the agents involved, taking into account each of these dimensions. One of the main conclusions is that reflection is a fundamental part of the evaluation process, as well as of the student learning process because it allows them to deepen the lived experience.

Abstract:

This manuscript presents an innovative experience in the teaching–learning process with three objectives. The first is to incorporate the principles and values of social justice, reciprocity and solidarity in the subject ‘Statistics Applied to Business’ in the bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Management at the University of the Basque Country. The second objective addresses how to apply active methodologies in the teaching of economics and business from a competency-based approach in order to investigate its impact. The third one, on the other hand, tries to explore how to provide students with active distance learning tools to improve and guarantee the quality of the teaching–learning process. The results of the experience demonstrate the potential of technical subjects for the development of transversal competencies and the capacity of students to design and solve complex problems with creativity and knowledge of social and labour realities. Likewise, greater motivation, better knowledge acquisition and appropriation of the work by the students are also detected. Finally, this article shows the potential of methodologies that involve the ombined responsibility of students and teachers in the generation of knowledge that favours a professional development that is permeable and sensitive to the changes occurring in the social and labour world.

Abstract:

Abstract:

We are living in times of great transformations within the field of education and the labor market. These changes are connected and have to do with an expanded knowledge society, whose implications reach the levels of employability in times of uncertainty. Within this framework, the main purpose of our study is to perform a theoretical analysis and an empirical approach to the influence that transversal competences (soft skills) may have on the degree of employability of university students. We have identified some of those competences and we have tested them with a sample of 83 employers and 1249 students using a Likert scale. Our results show the interest of employers in the mastery of transversal competences and inequalities in terms of students’ perception thereof. We did not find any significant differences between students starting their degree and those who were about to complete it. However, we did find differences between the students who participated in experiential activities and those who did not, in favor of the former. Due to the importance of experiential learning in our results, we dedicate our discussion to theoretically exploring whether the pedagogical approach of Service-Learning (SL) might contribute to a better connection between transversal competences and employability.

Abstract:

Service learning projects promote student learning through active participation in community service. Thus, the service learning method enables students to engage directly with the people to whom they offer their services and requires them to adapt to other peoples’ needs and to a reality that is often very different from the classroom. This is one of the major ways in which service learning has an impact. In addition, service learning helps to awaken students’ interest in collective action, citizenship, etc. A comprehensive diagnostic study of 39 students was conducted to analyse four key dimensions (attributed knowledge and intentionality, evaluation of usefulness, evaluation of the process and social impact) on the basis of the chosen satisfaction model. The four dimensions led to reflection on key elements of learning and community service (learning about citizenship, learning about oneself, learning of a curriculum, processes of reflection, etc.). The main data analysis technique was content analysis, involving the triangulation of various techniques (questionnaires, interviews and discussion groups) and informants (students, teachers, coordinators and members of other organisations). Data analysis showed a high degree of satisfaction among the participating students. The dimension that most influenced the results was assessment of the attributed value, more specifically the students’ perception of their acquisition of conceptual, personal and citizenship knowledge. It should be cautioned that the results were swayed by the relationship generated among teachers, students and institutions and the possibility of linking theory with practice.

Abstract:

This paper describes the experience which was undertaken in the “Lifelong learning” subject, taught in the Degree of Education Science at the Teacher Training and Education Faculty (University of Oviedo). This subject was taught in the second semester of the academic year 2013/2014. 111 students participated. The activity described required the design of a service-learning project. The main intention was to approach this methodology and stimulate reflections on small experiences of social engagement to gradually enable students to undertake more ambitious projects. The most relevant aspects of the experience are explained and some examples of projects prepared by groups of students in various areas (civic participation, health promotion, direct assistance to individuals, generational exchange and cultural heritage) are pointed out. We end with some conclusions about the most important benefits of this methodology in three areas: academic curriculum, value education and community outreach. Although it was a minor social practice, it represented an opportunity for the development of initiative, creativity, future vision, confidence, tenacity and positive thinking, all qualities needed in people with an entrepreneurial spirit. Abstract:

In recent years, engineering colleges have started to integrate service-learning projects into many of their required courses. In the literature, there are many important definitions for service-learning pedagogy, including reciprocity, reflection, coaching and community projects. This paper presents a service-learning pedagogy implementation program for educating engineering undergraduates to solve real-world problems. Three project models for mechanical engineering, ranging from a single semester to a full calendar year, form the basis for the analyses presented. Finding appropriate community partners and projects are critical for a successful experience for all involved parties. From the results of this analysis, it is possible to conclude that, through these projects, students acquired and applied the competencies in the defined curriculum.

Abstract:

A culture of training teaching staff in specific teaching skills is spreading throughout higher education in Europe and other regions. In recent years, service-learning has been one of the active methodologies that has attracted the most attention in educational literature and in training practices. This piece uses an ex post facto cross-sectional study to quantify and describe service learning training provision in Spanish universities, using an information recording sheet to gather evidence from institutional websites and an unstructured questionnaire as a complementary data source. Our results support the claim that teaching training activities are growing and that there are some advances in the consolidation of this trend. However, significant limitations were identified, such as a lack of a practice-based orientation in teacher training and the lack of a coordinated plan to facilitate learning ecologies, something that is hindering the reflective, cooperative, and transformative impact that is attributed to the service learning method. Based on this diagnosis, we suggest that training activities be incorporated into multi-year plans, and note that sociocritical and practical orientations would work better together, and that collaborative work between universities and community services should be strengthened.

Abstract:

This article investigates the representations of first year arts undergraduates emerging from a series of service-learning projects designed for groups at risk of social exclusion. A rubric was used in the design and assessment of the projects. Applying the presuppositions of Grounded Theory, two researchers carried out a qualitative analysis of the changes in the conception and justification of the projects that occurred during the academic year. The results highlighted three fundamental achievements made by the students: a) the understanding that art is an indispensable element in personal development and in social progress; b) the beginning of the process of construction of a professional identity in the field of the arts; and c) a reinforcement of the metacognitive dimension of learning. This last aspect increased the students’ awareness and commitment to their projects, and was a determining factor in the quality of their final products.

Abstract:

University has the responsibility to train professionals, which means providing people with the necessary competences to face the world with an engagement to social justice. This paper presents a service-learning experience (SL) -and its evaluation-as a way of collaboration, service and improvement of community. Firstly, this work analyses SL and its theoretical context as a methodology in relation to community development and emotional intelligence. Secondly, a SL experience, conducted in grades of education at the University of Navarra, is described. The objective has been to accompany the students in the analysis of the socio-educational action and capacitate them to intervene pedagogically in specific areas. Finally, the evaluation made through satisfaction questionnaires is presented; also a scale analysis of professional skills worked, made to that effect. The results show that methodologies such as SL allow achieving a high degree of satisfaction, engagement and motivation of students for the task required.

Abstract:

INTRODUCTION. In the light of the challenges raised by the internationalisation framework established since the beginning of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), as well as our turbulent present in which social problems are demanding urgent actions, Service Learning appears as an interesting option where ethics play a capital role in order to improve the quality of our students’ learning and the whole society. METHOD. In this paper we explore the underlying interests of these practices from a theoretical discourse in its pragmatic sense, obviously rooted in the ideas of John Dewey, the main keystone of the following paragraphs. These reflections are supported by different analyses from two specific sources: 1) The project Service Learning and Innovation at university: a programme to develop the academic outcome and social capital of the students and 2) the CIS study titled Attitudes of the youth in Spain towards participation and volunteering. RESULTS. Service Learning is a methodology with clear ethical implications which fosters a harmonious competence acquisition. In addition, far from admitting a spurious ambition from the students who participate in these practices, we defend that their interest is inherent to the human being, plausible and even desirable. The lack of time, related to interest and effort, appears as a relevant variable. DISCUSSION. Moreover, in this paper we will also debate some of the theoretical concepts of John Dewey which have direct implications for coherent Service Learning practices, something that is not always clearly done when this methodology is embedded in his educational philosophy.

Abstract:

The University as an educational institution and substantial element of society requires a constant revision in its ways of interaction and communication with the surrounding environment. This work aims to influence the new forms of communication that are being implemented in Higher Education due to overcoming traditional models, hence striving to strengthen the communicative ties and participatory involvement of public citizens. To do this, we will insist on various communication strategies that the university incorporates; and we will pay special attention to the case of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). So, we will reflect on its field and possibilities for improvement. In this scenario we consider it important to highlight the contribution of the Service-Learning proposal. We are referring to a pedagogical approach that integrates the development of skills in college students with community service. We will emphasize the opportunity that this proposal gives us in order to integrate Teaching, Research and Extension, assignments of the University in relation to the Society; and new challenges and opportunities for communication that can be derived from this practice.

Abstract:

Introduction. The low productivity that prevailing in recent years in Higher Education requires urgently institutional responses aimed to improving quality of university education contributing to the development among students of key competences for lifelong learning. In this sense, the aim of this research was to explore the effects of an intervention program, based on service-learning and peer mentoring methodologies, to enhance social skills and the learn to learn skill of university students.

Method. The sample was composed of 78 university students of 5 degrees related to the teaching profession of the University of Huelva (Spain). The methodological design adopted was quasi-experimental pretest-posttest, using standardized tests to evaluate the dependent variables. The intervention consisted of 481 mentoring sessions, 423 individual and 58 in group, among the university students, as mentors, previously trained in 3 sessions of training, and students in Compulsory Education. These sessions spread throughout the second and third quarters of the school year 2013/ 2014 during out of school time, a weekly mentoring session among the couple of mentors with their mentee lasted for 90 minutes each.

Results. The results show statistically significant differences in favour of the posttest phase in social skills and strategies for learning and motivation of the participants.

Discussion and Conclusion. These results agree largely whit the empirical evidences from specialized literature show when service-learning and peer mentoring methodology are used as the basis for an intervention program.

The Extension is considered as one of the core functions of the University. In this paper we will approach briefly the concept of Extension, then move on to review some of the experiences in this line of work at different universities. We will make a special mention of the proposed Service-Learning as a tool that contributes to this function; and will specifically approach some of the results obtained in the thesis: “Service- learning (S-L) at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU): on the way to its institutionalization”. This research has focused on the study of various dimensions, yet here we will focus on those elements most closely linked to the University extension. A study combining various research tools and techniques such as the questionnaire and discussion groups allowed us to approach these elements. The study used a sample of 154 students, 11 lectures and 14 partners. The protagonists of these projects value the contribution of S-L to the development of the University extension function; however, they point to the need to leap from individual experiences to a more orderly, systematic implementation of it.

Abstract:

INTRODUCTION. In recent years, universities, as a social institutions, have begun to deal with the social commitment that they have by trying to respond to their environment in different actions that enable social enrichment. METHOD. Service-learning provides the methodology that facilitates this social action from the university classroom. In this work we present a Project developed with undergraduate students in the Degrees of Pre-School and Primary School Education. In this project the future teacher students within training practices of two subjects have created ICT materials for attention to diversity in real situations. These materials respond to the needs demanded by two different Primary schools from the area to be used in their classroom. RESULTS. During the academic years of 2013 to 2016 future teacher students have developed more than 200 micro-projects creating ICT materials for attention to diversity. The materials included from the creation of multimedia materials for mathematical work, learning how to read, social skills, and resources for interactive white boards, educational videos or materials for the deaf students, among others. All the materials have been developed within the practical classes of two subjects related with Technologies and Attention to diversity from the Education Degrees. There sources developed were donated to be used in Primary Education classrooms at two schools in the area. DISCUSSION. The possibilities offered by service learning, make the university students achieve the proposed acquisition of skills in the different modules. Moreover, service learning enables students to develop a social conscience and citizenship essential for becoming a future teacher.

Abstract:

Introduction: The Service-Learning methodology is one of the most appropriate to adapt to changes, and new social and educational challenges in the Higher Education environment. This is an approach that promotes an experiential type of learning in which the teaching staff does not play a prominent role, but those who offer and receive the service. There are several reasons for proposing this methodology in the university classrooms, and they have to do with the improvement of the educational processes, students’ ethical and civic education, as well as with the improvement of the existing linkages between university and society. Specifically, our objective in this paper is to analyze which are the variables explaining the introduction of the Service-Learning methodology by a university professor. Methodology: To this end, a study involving 1903 professors from 6 Spanish universities was carried out. They were administered the “Questionnaire on Teaching Practice and Attitude of University Professors towards Innovation” (CUPAIN). Results: With the data obtained, a logistic regression was performed in order to estimate the probability that a university teacher uses ServiceLearning according to sociodemographic variables (gender, age, type of subject, students enrolled, administrative situation, experience, cycle), teaching practice, engagement with the university’s social commitment, and interest in innovative teaching practices; subsequently, a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) 5 X 2, and a Chi-square test were applied. Discussion and Conclusions: The data analysis allowed us to conclude that, of all the analyzed variables, the one that better predicts the use of SL by the teaching staff is their engagement with the university’s social commitment, in such a way that the probability of using this methodology is 3.52 times higher than not doing it.

Abstract:

Bridging the connections between what students learn in the university and practice in real professional settings is a secular aspiration of higher education. Service learning is a methodology aimed at encouraging student learning through active participation in experiences related to community service. This methodology, although still testimonial, is growing in recent years in Spanish universities, highlighting initiatives of a voluntary nature for students and without a direct link to specific subjects. The present study describes an experience that incorporates service learning in a university subject framed in a curriculum for the training of teachers in Primary Education. A total of 67 university students, who gave lessons to 429 primary education students (aged 6-10), participated in the project. In order to record the opinion of the staff involved and the students’ perception of learning, several assessments tools were used, as questionnaires, interviews, journals and student reports were used. The results reflect the possibilities of service learning to reduce academic bias in curricula, increasing the relationships between theory and practice, and to enable students to acquire cross-curricular skills. Likewise, guidelines are provided that may be useful for any university teacher who aims to carry out this methodology with his students.

Abstract:

Service-Learning (SL) is a teaching innovation method that combines learning and social service objectives to improve educational quality and graduate employability. To date, there are hardly any studies on its global impact on university students. This paper describes and evaluates an SL experience for Sustainability Entrepreneurship in the context of Spanish Higher Education. Based on knowledge acquired in classrooms, multi-disciplinary teams of students from different subjects related to Business Administration offered support to potential entrepreneurs from rural municipalities in the complex task of writing a successful Business Plan for their projects for local sustainability. Within this academic framework, our study has two goals: (1) to assess the self-perception of university students about the improvement in their curricular development, professional skills and civic-social responsibility after participating in the SL experience; and (2) to estimate its possible effect on academic performance. The results show that the students acknowledged they had improved their social and sustainability commitment and their curricular development, and had acquired skills that society increasingly demands from future business professionals. Furthermore, service-students achieved significantly higher academic performance than a control group of non-participating students. These findings highlight the effectiveness of SL to provide a more holistic education for business university students.

Abstract:

Service-Learning (SL) has become a teaching methodology that promotes social and personal skills while helping groups in need and at risk of social exclusion. This paper is a systematic review of the literature on SL experiences and research on college subjects in the area of health-care promotion in settings for older adults. After an exhaustive search, 43 peer-reviewed publications were classified according to frequency and geographical distribution, sample and duration of the programs, research methodologies, data collection instruments used, and main outcomes investigated. The results indicate that the research methodologies used tended to be qualitative and mixed, while the variety of samples and duration of interventions was very broad. The instruments used were mainly interviews and questionnaires, and the programs were developed specially in the United States of America. The groups receiving most SL were healthy older adults and older adult populations with aging disabilities and illnesses. The articles in the present review highlight that SL can have a positive effect on older adults’ health promotion and can enhance their community participation.

Abstract:

This article reflects on the ethical and civic value of the Service Learning projects, from a bibliographic review process, but also from an own foundation based on a hermeneutical analysis of this teaching-learning methodology. It is concluded that the Service Learning projects contribute to a practical synthesis between the ethics of care and that of justice, and contributes to a new definition of the concept of education, while those projects encourage meaningful learning and ethical and civic dimension of educational processes, according with proposals for human development and education understood as a common good from international organizations such as Unesco. After the theoretical foundation, we present a case of the institutionalization of Service Learning in Higher Education (Universitat de Palencia), from the reconsideration of the university as a public space committed to the professional ethics and university social responsibility.

Abstract:

INTRODUCTION. The aim of this research was to find out the impact that service-learning methodology has on the development of sustainability competences amongst university students (namely those taking the degrees of Primary, Infant and Social Education) of three Spanish Universities UAM and USAL). METHOD. A sample of 129 university students of the academic year 2017-18 was used. A pre-experimental study was carried out, a pre-test-post-test study with natural groups, without a control group. The purpose was to assess the development of competencies in sustainability amongst students undertaking five modules taught through service-learning as the teaching and learning strategy. RESULTS. The results of this study show that service-learning has contributed to improve the understanding and knowledge of sustainability, as well as the interrelations between the social, environmental and economic dimensions in the five cases studied. In addition, the findings of this study demonstrate how the use of service-learning promotes the development of practical skills associated with action. DISCUSSION. It is evident that service-learning has a significant influence on the development of the competence for sustainability related to the contextualization of knowledge and the interrelation between social, environmental and economic dimensions of sustainability. Of the three levels of competence acquisition: Knowledge; Know how; Doing, we observed that service-learning has a greater impact on the Know how level. This is attributed to the methodology, which focuses on praxis and the application of theoretical knowledge in real practical contexts. Specific modules in sustainability are those that most contribute to the competencies for learning about sustainability . In addition to the holistic integration of these competences in the curriculum, it is necessary to include specific subjects in sustainability.

Abstract:

Models of intervention and research in initial teacher training (2018), in the University collection of the Octaedro Publishing House, in the subject of Higher Education, is a book dedicated to bringing the pedagogical method of Learning-Service (ApS) to the university community. The ApS is a conception that integrates different trends that do not correspond to a unique reality, let alone neutral, highlighting the constant evolution in which this methodology is found. Although the experiences of ApS are increasingly present and acquire greater prominence in higher education, research in the educational field is in an embryonic state. The development and participation in ApS projects can contribute significantly to teacher training, providing this with qualities that will help you improve in your usual practice. The current perspective of the research around the ApS shows some examples, obtaining numerous benefits and learning for all the agents involved in this type of projects and showing the capacity of this methodology to offer answers to educational and social needs. In short, the ApS is an enlightening example to advance our training as teachers, favoring the integral development of the personality and professional training of students in initial training, according to the current educational and social reality.

Abstract:

Higher education requires a pedagogical transformation to guide teaching practice toward true educational competences. Service-Learning (SL) has become a teaching methodology that promotes social and personal skills. This systematic review of the literature reports SL experiences and research of university subjects related to physical education and sport sciences. All of them are based on different descriptive axes such as the type of publication: description of educational experiences, research articles or theoretical works. Similarly, this review has considered the geographical location, the methodological approaches used, the type of service provided and the different profiles of service recipient groups. Following an exhaustive search, 18 peer-reviewed publications were organized according to the methodology used, characteristics of the sample, duration and intensity of intervention programmes, instruments used, geographic distribution, profile of the group receiving the service and effects on students’ academic learning. The results indicate that the methodologies used tended to be qualitative, while the variety of samples and duration of interventions was very broad. The instruments used were mainly interviews and questionnaires. Most of the groups receiving SL included people with functional diversity or disabilities, children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, children with special educational needs, people at a disadvantage or social exclusion and curricular lag. The publications in the present review highlight the impact of SL in university subjects related to physical education and sport sciences.

Abstract:

The PEINAS project (Intercultural Pedagogy and Service-Learning) was born in the academic year 2010/2011 associated to an academic subject called “Intercultural Pedagogy” (Second year of the Degree in Pedagogy, University of Santiago de Compostela). The project aims to improve the knowledge of the different cultural communities in Galicia about their social and educational realities. Thus, students create links with different entities where they undertake a social service, on an academic basis, according to specific needs. What this paper intends is to explore the development of civic-social competence in university students who participate in a project of these characteristics. In addition, we compare students who participated in the project with those who did not participate. To this end, we use a post-test elaborated within the framework of a project of the Spanish National Plan for Research (EDU2013-41687-R), which allows us to see the differences among groups of students. The conclusions highlight the fact that students who participate in such experiences increase their opportunities to acquire a series of relational and civic-social skills of considerable importance for their practical training and the development of sound learning structures.

Abstract:

The purpose of this research is to perform a systematic review of the literature published on the benefits of applying the service-learning methodology with business students. Several works and studies identify significant contributions that are important to the student’s profile; however, a systematic review of the benefits derived from the methodology application in the profile previously described has not yet been conducted. The main objective of this study is to gather, identify, and classify evidence from 32 studies conducted across global business schools regarding the benefits of service-learning in university students. The applied methodology follows the “Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses” statement for systematic reviews. The studies were extracted from the World of Science, Scopus, and Educational Resource Information Center databases and were analyzed according to the suggested objectives. The suggested systematic review provides a rigorous analysis of academic literature on the benefits of service learning in the student’s personal, social, academic, and civic environment. A theoretical framework that combines all gathered benefits from the 32 studies has been suggested in these pages, by means of grouping these benefits into four categories considering prior research on the academic, personal, social, and citizenship outcomes. Several quantitative, qualitative, and mixed studies support the benefits of this methodology, focusing on the student’s profile development. We found that students enjoy plenty of outcomes after participating in the service-learning experience, thus, the most frequent outcome is greater social engagement. With more than 4,000 students involved in the total analyzed studies, we present a list of ranked outcomes that reflects and supports the strength of the methodology. Through this study, institutions as well as teachers may be aware of the potential present in this methodology. Our study also suggested a framework for university coordinators to act.

Abstract:

INTRODUCTION. Literature has highlighted the importance of the study of academic identity for the change of education. In the case of service-learning (S-L) as educational innovation and pedagogical approach, methodology, programs and even philosophy of training, a different way of understanding as a teacher is presented. In this context, this research aims to identify the features and characteristics of the academic identity and the teachers who work with service-learning, as well as their role in their teaching work and its impact on the university. METHOD. The mix methodology was used to analyze 4 research works about service-learning. Specifically, the results of 319 questionnaires, 8 interviews, 3 discussion groups and 60 stories of teachers, students and community partners will be analyzed. RESULTS. The results show that the teaching staff of S-L has a representation of the teaching learning process in which the students are the protagonists of the process and the key to cooperation, motivation and active participation of the students. In this sense, the key functions of the teaching staff is the possibility of accompanying, enabling a scenario for possible learning and leading the process together with the students and community partners DISCUSSION. The results show that the university teaching staff in S-L incorporates the components that respond to being a university professor to enable deep and extensive learning by the students, and university social responsibility. In addition, this academic identity questions with its practice the contradictions of the current university marked by commercialization and evaluative pressure, posing a way of being transformative in the contexts in which it is developed.

Abstract:

This research aims to demonstrate that the service-learning methodology is an effective tool for people with intellectual disabilities to acquire the necessary skills to solve the drowning of another person, assuming minimal risk. In addition, it is also intended to know the perception of university students about the effect that the participation in a service-learning project developed with people with intellectual disabilities, has caused on them. To achieve these objectives, this research has had the voluntary participation of students of the Physical Activity and Sport Science Degree to provide two sessions of aquatic rescue to a group of people with intellectual disability. The methodology used in this study has been quantitative and qualitative. The results show that the service-learning methodology is a useful tool to improve the safety of people with intellectual disabilities in the aquatic environment. Regarding the second of the objectives set for this study, it is concluded that university students have perceived that their academic competence, their respect and their understanding towards people with intellectual disabilities has increased. At the same time, the students have perceived changes in their personal identity and they have expressed the intention to be involved in projects with a positive social impact in the future.

Abstract:

As a pedagogical approach, Service Learning (SL) has blossomed in the field of education, proving its effectiveness regarding academic results and in relation to social commitment. Our goal was to offer students the possibility of participating in professional scenarios measure the impact that SL benefits has on students’ valuations and perceptions of their respective learning processes and to see whether it differed from results coming from a non SL approach. To do this we compared two groups of undergraduate students enrolled in the same Psychology course, and in two different formats: SL and non-SL. Our hypothesis predicted that SL students would report higher levels of valuations and of changes perceived, and our results confirmed this: the SL group revealed a significantly higher level of satisfaction with the SL course. Also, SL students reported significantly more changes connected to a concept of learning that included contents, behaviors, and personal changes.

In the Physical Activity and Sport field there is an increasing number of good practices of USL applied in different contexts and adopting a series of perspectives, from a holistic conception of the person, related to human movement such as education, health, inclusion, socialization and recreation. Nevertheless, through a literature review of this topic, it is perceived that the evaluation of these practices has mainly focused on the effects on students’ learning. Therefore, the evaluation of its social impact has been certainly disregarded. The present article attempts to deepen in this sense; in consequence, its objective consists of proposing an evaluation model of the impact of the USL of the Physical Activity and Sport practices, paying special attention to the social aspect of the service. The proposal presented in this text is based on the Stakeholders Theory (Freeman, 1984) and it is developed bearing in mind the idiosyncrasy of USL in Physical Activity and Sport. To pin down this proposal, we provide some criteria and specific indicators to evaluate the social impact.
